Amsterdammertje

“Amsterdammertje” on its own literally means “the little one from Amsterdam” but in practice it’s actually the bollards that line old streets, acting as curbs to the sidewalks. In the old days, they were actually made of used canons.

Nostalgia seems right when describing Amsterdam. Even though it’s a modern city, nostalgia is a feeling one gets when roaming the streets. The Dutch love using the word “gezellig” which simply meaning “cozy” but must include a sense of people.

Most of these nostalgic-looking photos were taken with my iPhone over a period of six years that I lived there. It’s so easy to be surprised with delight on your way anywhere in Amsterdam. My first photography teacher taught us: “the best camera is the one on you.” I love this little part of Holland. It’s magical and it still feels like my home (one of many).
